A battalion comprising soldiers from both Western Australia and South Australia, formed in Egypt in 1916 from veterans of the 16th Battalion. As part of the 12th Brigade, the battalion fought in many Western Front battles, including Pozieres, Mouquet Farm, Gueudecourt, Bellecourt, Messines, Ypres, Dernancourt, Monument Wood, Amiens and the Hindenburg Outpost Line.
